Nyambui said the USA event will help them as AT is throwing everything on juniors in international meets to expose them to high-profile stage. He said AT wants to use the USA championships as a step towards developing the young athletes. He said most of the athletics power-house countries invest in youth or junior events
. “Right now we are focusing more on youngsters because we are targeting to have at least six athletes at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. We have youngsters with great potentials so the future looks bright,” he said.
He declined to name the junior athletes earmarked for the event, saying technical committee of the association will soon meet to discuss on names and budget.
“We are looking for money to send our junior athletes to the World Junior Championships slated for July in Eugene at Hayward Field, this is one of the best events which is used to expose young athletes” he said. He said AT will organize a junior event where young athletes will seek qualifying time for the USA championships. Last year, the country did not send its junior athletes to similar event held Ukraine where USA led in medal collection (187); Kenya was second with 150 medals followed by Russia which had 95.
